A new fundamental on assistant platforms by Rainer Schmidt, Rainer Alt and Alfred Zimmermann has been published in the academic journal Electronic Markets. It is a fundamental article on the assistance systems that have emerged in recent years, such as voice (e.g. Alexa, Siri, Messenger) and text assistants (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude). It characterizes these systems using an architectural model in terms of their platform characteristics and capabilities. The former include a multi-platform architecture, a declarative interface and a multi-platform ecosystem, while the latter include composition, integration, prediction and generativity capabilities. Based on the architecture, the authors propose a comprehensive agenda for future research in this area.
