Abstract:
“Data is the new oil” has become a common refrain entailing the emergence of a new industry of data marketplaces and a new research strand dealing with the determination of the value of data. If datasets are considered as products that are sold on data marketplaces, then two questions arise: First, what are value drivers of data and, secondly, which price setting methods to determine the optimal price of data exist? Due to the novelty of the literature, hardly any evidence on these topics exists. To close this gap, we conduct a systematic literature review to identify practical methods and value drivers that enable the pricing of data. Since none of the identified methods are applicable in practice as a stand-alone approach, based on the findings in the literature we suggest a three-step pricing approach and enrich it with a comprehensive list of 35 value drivers which are categorized along the dimensions of Utility, Data Quality and Data Cost.
